All death records for Bethel residents are held by the Health Analytics and Vital Records Section (HAVRS) at the state level. The City of Bethel at cityofbethel.org provides local government information but does not store or issue death certificates.

Alaska Statute AS 18.50 governs all vital records statewide. Death records are restricted for 50 years from the date of death. Records from before 1975 are now available to any researcher. Records from 1975 onward require proof of an eligible relationship to the deceased. According to the Alaska Vital Statistics 2022 Annual Report, the Bethel Census region recorded 407 births and 162 deaths in 2022, reflecting the region's role as a center for a wide area of rural Western Alaska.

Statewide death registration in Alaska began in 1913, though full compliance in remote areas like Bethel Census Area took longer to achieve. Bethel, as a regional hub, was one of the earlier communities in Western Alaska to be integrated into the territorial vital records system. Precinct-level records from the territorial period are held in state archives.
