Kenai Overview
Kenai Death Records and the State System
Kenai is a city on the western Kenai Peninsula, situated along the shore of Cook Inlet. All death records for Kenai residents are held by the Health Analytics and Vital Records Section (HAVRS) at the state level. The Kenai Peninsula Borough Courthouse is located at 144 N Binkley, Soldotna, AK 99669, phone (907) 262-4441. The borough does not issue death certificates but can direct researchers to the appropriate state resources.
Alaska Statute AS 18.50 governs all vital records statewide. Death records are restricted for 50 years from the date of death. Records from before 1975 are now publicly available. Records from 1975 onward require proof of an eligible relationship, such as being the spouse, parent, child, or sibling of the deceased.
Kenai has a documented history as one of the earliest non-Native settlements on the Kenai Peninsula. Death records for the area date to 1914. The Russian Orthodox Church maintained vital records for this community from the early colonial period, some of which are now accessible through archival collections. Statewide registration began in 1913, and Kenai was among the communities brought into compliance in the early years of that system.
