Wasilla Death Records
Wasilla death records are maintained by Alaska's Health Analytics and Vital Records Section at the state level. Wasilla is located in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, which does not issue or store vital records. All requests for certified death certificates for Wasilla residents must go through the state HAVRS office in Anchorage or Juneau. This page explains the full request process, covers what historical records exist for the Mat-Su area, and points you to additional research tools.
Wasilla Overview
Wasilla Death Records and the State System
Wasilla is one of the larger cities in Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The borough was incorporated on January 1, 1964. Like all Alaska boroughs, it does not maintain vital records. Death certificates for Wasilla residents are issued exclusively by the Health Analytics and Vital Records Section (HAVRS). The City of Wasilla government at cityofwasilla.com handles municipal services but cannot process vital records requests.
Alaska Statute AS 18.50 governs all vital records statewide. Death records are restricted for 50 years from the date of death. Records from before 1975 are now public. Records from 1975 onward require proof of an eligible relationship. Wasilla's population growth in the last several decades of the 20th century means that most death records researchers need for this area are within the restricted 50-year window and require proof of family relationship.
Death registration in Alaska began in 1913. Wasilla's early records from the Mat-Su Valley's homesteading era are part of the broader Alaska State Archives territorial collections. The statewide Alaska Vital Records 1816-2005 collection at FamilySearch includes Mat-Su records within the territorial registration system. Researchers working on pre-1950 deaths in the Wasilla area should consult the Archives and FamilySearch for available collections.
