Eagle River Death Records and the State System

Eagle River is a community in the Chugiak-Eagle River area of Anchorage Municipality, situated about 15 miles north of downtown Anchorage along the Glenn Highway. All death records for Eagle River residents are maintained by the Health Analytics and Vital Records Section (HAVRS) at the state level. The Municipality of Anchorage at muni.org provides local government information but does not issue or store death certificates.

Alaska Statute AS 18.50 governs all vital records statewide. Death records are restricted for 50 years from the date of death. Records from before 1975 are now publicly available. Records from 1975 onward require proof of an eligible relationship to the deceased, such as being a spouse, parent, child, or sibling. Eagle River grew significantly in the latter half of the 20th century, so most records requested for this community will fall within the restricted period.

Because Eagle River is part of the Municipality of Anchorage, death records filed for Eagle River residents are part of the Anchorage area filing system within the HAVRS database. Researchers and family members should reference Anchorage Municipality when describing the area for record requests, though the specific city or community name can be included for clarification.
